guamanian breakfast

Got up this am and treated him. (don't get spoiled mister) Made rice, left over chicken and cuk salad.
I remember before moving to Deans circle, we lived in Dededo. The Guamanian lady down the street always made a big breakfast in the morning....smelled sooogood. She used to cut my hair too and we used to listen to Elvis records.
Funny how sometimes I can't remember what happened yesterday, but I remember that :)

Food has a way of reviving our memories and stimulating our thoughts of the good ol days. I can still taste those red empanadas and marinated chicken barbequed over tangan-tangan.. and...........................

Well they say that your short term memory is the, wait what were we talking about?
Oh, yeah, if I hear one of my daughters say "I know, right" or "whatever" or "like you know" one more time I swear I'm going back in time and getting a vasectomy.
You hardly ever see pinball machines anywhere any more.
Today would be a good day for a dip in the water tower. Good times.
Speaking of food I still think the chili over rice at the Union was one of the more under rated culinary masterpieces on the island.
And speaking of food, or the lack thereof, I think one of the hungriest times in my life was during our three day survival journey down to Sella Bay where by the second day we were basically subsisting off of the land. And we had to hump all of our gear up the side of that mountain.
Random thoughts "I know right".
But like whatever.

Oh Yes, random thoughts. I remember my brothers, Dan Larson and me going down the hill behind the "Larson House" where some one was having a wedding fiesta. Boy did we eat! No one noticed us, even though we were the only light colored folk there. When good food is served…no one cares…they just enjoy. I still buy SPAM (but the turkey type) and it drives my wife crazy! Just buying SPAM reminds me of the good times I had on the “Rock”. Yep, food has a way of reviving the memories Dave! Anyone out there got the recipe for pickled papaya?

I make pickeled papaya once in a while and Susan loves it. The hard part is finding green papaya's. When they have any pink, they turn to mush pretty quick.

Wow you guys are so true. Dave, yea, that is kinda funny about food, how it can provoke memories from long ago.
And Doug, the "whatever" kills me....especially after I catch my own lips saying it.
Ric, I want that recipe for pickled papaya! My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy when I describe it, but it just can't be understood till you taste it. The Mexican grocery has green ones all the time. So far all I've done is look and touch them and go "yummmm" Sean, send your recipe :)

Doug, I forgot the hike....hahaha don't remember being as hungry as I was Thirsty. We didn't plan too well for water supplies. I know when we got down the mountain to a house, we sucked that water hose dry...pretty much :)

Slice the green papaya and rub with salt and soak in water for a little bit then drain and add vinegar and hot pepper.mmmm. And yea the chicken grilled on tangantangan. When ever I'm out walking the dog in the winter and someone has their fireplace going and the smell of the woods burning really brings the memories back. When those cravings hit watch out man!Hahahaha

TY Mat :)

Pickled papaya! I forgot all about that! But I've never given up the SPAM. We do the turkey or low fat SPAM only. By the way, SPAM is an acronym for... WHAT? My guess is: Specially Particulated Animal Matter. Any other guesses?

Per Hormel "Shoulder of Pork And
Ham".
Or in other words, pork byproducts.

SPicedhAM according to Hormel but I think David Waites is more accurate.Hahaha. Remember the movie The Great Outdoors? with John Candy and Dan Ackroyd? Hot Dogs, lips and ass.....!

Yep.
I know someone that worked at a Taco Bell and was part of the crew that would unload the "meat" and stuff off of the truck when it delivered, usually late at night.
The boxes said "Grade E Meat".
What the hell is Grade E meat?
They called the place "Toxic Hell"

Pat said...

Grade E? that's 4 after A. Ugh! They put enough spices, hides the taste.
