Still have some old ordy's from back in the boonie stomping days. Nothing like that of course. United Movers would have shit had they known about some of the stuff we carried back stateside.

I was *just* relating that story to some coworkers in the Netherlands.

On the same trip I ran into someone in line at airport security. He was wearing a T-Shirt that said "Saipan, where America's day begins". Naturally, I had to take exception to that claim as it is clearly applicable to Guam. Wasn't even the motto at one point? Anyway, we got to chatting and he'd never been to Guam but has stayed with a friend in Saipan. I guess it is a bit bleak over there after the sweat factories were shut down...

I guess that does beg the question, where does the sun come up first, Guam or Saipan?
Notwithstanding that Saipan is not a US territory.
And how in the hell do you get to Saipan without flying into Guam first? There's direct flights into Saipan?!

Saipan is a bit to the east of Guam, so the sun would rise there earlier. However, it isn't a territory so it really can't be where "America's day begins", can it?

I wouldn't think so. Although they will forever hold the title of where big assed bombs that leveled two japanese cities took off from.
Kind of hard to top that.

Saipan is a commonwealth, whatever that means. The slogon was ripped off. Our license plates have had it for years.

Both "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" were launched from Tinian.

You are correct. My mistake. Guess they don't even have that distinction.

Actually Saipan is probaly more American than Guam. They(CNMI)actually have a vote in congress where Guam doesn't. Saipan negotiated a better political status for themselves than Guam did with the U.S. Look it up.Guam is just a stepchild of the U.S.sucking up the benes.Whereas Saipan can chart their own destiny. To bad their gov. is even more corrupt than govguam. But at least they have that option. It is theirs to do with as they will.Isn't that really the American way?

Well that is interesting. See this why we keep coming back to this site.
I also see where 3% of the world's Levis were produced there until they shut the place down.
Seems that they were labeling them "Made In the USA" when in fact they weren't.
I always enjoyed our junkets to Saipan. Flying on Air Micronesia prop jobs.
Place is dripping with history.
