Just so you know rac, my party affiliation has officially changed. I am now a registered independent. You'll have to mix up a new batch of mud to sling.. unless there are any republicans still out there. Good luck with that.
Because the Republican party has left the Republic. They may still be the lesser of two evils, but that line in the sand has been crossed too many times. Both Rep and Dem party have shifted to the left.
More like a sinking country. But don't kid yourself rac, republican doesn't necessarily mean conservative anymore. There are still far more conservatives in this country than liberals.. the only problem is, most of the liberals are in Washington DC.
Well actually that's not entirely accurate either. 132 million voted in the 2008 election which by pure numbers is by far the highest level of participation in a national election in our history. As a percentage of the eligible electorate just under 57% voted. The highest level of participation when measured by percentage of eligible electorate since 1968.
I hear you my brother. Some of us wonder how things might have turned out if the election of 2000 had come out differently. I'd bet on this. Had Al Gore won in 2000 Barack Obama would not have won in 2008.

"...There are still far more conservatives in this country than liberals.."
Yes, this was especially evident in last years presidential election which resulted in an electoral college landslide for the liberal candidate.
A liberal Democrat won because most conservatives refused to vote for the only alternative.. a sleepy liberal Republican candidate.

One can only wonder how things might have turned out if the other 43 percent had voted. More importantly, how the 2012 elections will turn out.
