to all you guam veterans
thankyou all for your service and sorry for the hell you had to go through for us. You had to be brave, no choice, even when you were scared as hell sometimes. when I was a little girl I worried. now my kids have to worry about war and the consequences. and they do worry
too much. Cindy's stepson Karl is out in that mess and we pray. I know mama will bring him home though.

Brothers in arms
First is my brother Ric.
Second, me.
Third is the USS Denver LPD
Last is me (this picture made it in the cruse book) in what I tried to change as our summer whites. The Navy said NO!!!!!! Oh well, it's just me.
Great American Smokeout
This Thursday, November 15th, will be the 30th annual Great American Smokeout. As a generation which grew up in a society that accepted and encouraged smoking, many of us picked up this horrible habit as teenagers. Now, as a tribute to my Mom, I encourage any of you who still smoke to put your best effort forward this day and quit. Why? Because cigarettes are what killed my mother. But not only did cigarettes kill her, they also took away any quality of life she might have been able to enjoy these last few years. So in her honor, do yourself and your love ones a favor and quit.
And what makes me qualified to preach these words? Because on November 15th it will be two years and one day that I will have been smoke free. After 30 some odd years of heavy smoking, I put them down one day never looked back. Believe me, it is the best thing you can do for yourself. And it really wasn't that hard.
Trust me, you are not alone. I'm sure there are a number of other folks here who kicked the habit and are more than willing to give their support. Come on - you can do it! And for you ex-smokers out there, let’s hear some words of encouragement.

You asked for them RAC
Okay, The first one is just below my knee. Yes, this is why Jill maried me. I have a Cock hanging below my knee.
Second, is my Navy Master Chief with Bald Eagle and Sun. It also has my nick name "Jo Jo". I was given that by my ship mates, after the Boz Scaggs song. Yea.
Third is Judy. She is holding a Helm, the simble for Navigation in the Navy. I was a Quartermaster. The name Judy is no real person. I was drinking with a British Naval Officer, and he told the ladies at our table that he had "Duty" for 24 hours tomorrow. He pronounced it "Judy". Haaaaa
I was never awarded anything like ESWAS, Winngs, or Dolfins. But the guys thought I deserved one for my, Well shall I say affection for the sweeter gender.

Rice Cookers
How many of you Howlees (Spelling again) living stateside now, own a genuine rice cooker, like the kind every family owned on Guam back in the day? Must admit that I do, and use it every other day!

Blood Sport
Maybe it was because we lived just outside a war zone, but it seemed many of our games involved a battle of some sort. Of course we had a number of weapons to choose from; rocks, dirt clumps, sticks and BB guns. My personal favorite was the sticker burr ball. Using great skill, one could harvest the pesky burrs from their stem and form a sizable ball. This ball could then be thrown at the opponent leaving a wound similar to a shotgun blast. The most memorable use we found for this weapon was the gauntlet. A group would gather around the street with freshly made ammo; some poor soul would then ride their bike through the crowd getting blasted from all sides. We would spend the next several minutes laughing and plucking the deadly burrs from the victim’s skin. Ah, to be young again.

Show your tats
I know some of you crazy fools at one point went out, got liquored up, then decided it would be fun to get a tattoo. Now's your chance to come clean and have some laughs too. Email me a picture of your ink and I'll post it on the blog. Everyone will then have to guess who it belongs to. Whoever gets the most points will win nothing... absolutely nothing. And no, those are not my man boobs.
Island Spirits Part II
Most indigenous peoples have their own brand of superstition and folklore; the people of Guam are certainly no exception. Who among us didn’t know someone pinched by the Taotao Mona while tromping thru the boonies? And what of the mysterious Lady in White? My own sister claims to have made contact with her after waking from a dreamy slumber one night. And what about you - what stories from the other side do you have to share? Or are you just too afraid to remember?
