New Year's Resolutions

I know it's kind out of style and most of them are never kept anyway but is anyone making any New Year's resolutions and what are they?

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas to all from Idaho.
These are from my front door this morning. If you look close, you can see Santas sliegh runner marks.

Me and my new Raider cap.
Hope you all have had a great time.
Welcome aboard CJ, to the first ever, 2nd annual, Dean's Circle blog. I know you are very busy writing books and living life to it's fullest, but please feel free in whatever spare time you may have, to post a few words, tell a few stories or share some pictures of your days on Guam. The more you visit, the more we will get to know you and perhaps someone out there will know someone you know.

Two Anderson Girls at Pago Bay Overlook, 1978

These two girls lived at Anderson AFB and attended GW from 1976 to 1978. The one on the left is named Marti and the one on the right is CJ Cantrell. CJ is now an author. I'll send her an invitation to join us, she will have some good stories to tell about her life and experiences on Guam. Does anyone recognize them or do the names sound familiar? I found CJ on Classmates and she says that she knows Desi.

Merry Christmas to all in the Circle

So much has happened in my life this past year. You all have had a part in it. I am still amazed that after all these years we are all visiting together again. I am still amazed that I got to talk to Matt Kalb, and Rick on the phone after 30 years. Rick, Sean and Dave(DRL), Joanna, Dean, Amy, over the years I have wondered what happened to you guys. We have such a deep history together and, unusual but common ground. Tomorrow is Christmas eve, hard to believe this year has pased so quickly. My dad used to say that the older you get, the faster time goes. I guess I am getting older, although I don't feel it sometimes.
Thank you all for being a part of my life, making me laugh and ressurecting so many good memories.
I have been relaying some of the wild stories(not all) from Deans Circle to my kids. They have been telling thier friends at school of all the crazy things their dad used to do. I have kids I don't even know coming up to me and asking me about our adventures, if they were really true, and if I did live on Guam. "Yes" I say, "I really lived there." We lived there. I do miss those days. (we need to write a book)
It's 31F here and the wind is blowing like crazy. Can't wait for the "Guam weather" ( 80 and 100% humidity) to return. Maybe in June.
Im writing form my family room watching the christmas tree twinkle(needles all over ther floor) watching my kids play, while we are supposed to be watching a movie together. I , We are so blessed. Our great country, our freedom, our wealth (yes, wealth compared to the rest of the world) we have so much to be thankful for. Yes we hurt from previous injuries and the aches and pains from growing old, however we are blessed. Although it is cold outside, I am warmed by the love and friendships we have.
Dave L, Robert C, again Thanks for bringing us together. And Iwant to say thank you to everyone who has logged into this site and have shared your memories. You have made 2007 a year I will never forget.
I won't be on line for a while. I have to do a total system restore on my laptop. I got Vista!!! goes with the territory.
So I'll stop rambling, got to get to bed, work tomorrow.
You all have a good Christmas! Remember the reason we have this holiday, to remember the gift of Christs Birth. And to remember the other half of the christmas story, God sending his only begotten son to give his life freely for ours on the cross.
Merry Christmas,
Dan Larson and family

Hi Gimpy..From Your Brother Ric

My 'Wife' Teresita (Teresa, your mean sister in law...hee, hee, suggested that you try one of those thermal disposable heating pads that you can buy over the counter) She uses them all the time to ease her back and neck pain. We both hope that you are feeling better, and hope the new meds are working well to ease the pain. He sister ( the sexy nurse suggested that you come over to her place and she'll nurse you back to health)!

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Hi from Gimpy

I have not been too active lately. My back has been hurting worse. There are two kinds of popular drivers. 1. some one with a pickup, and 2. someone with a handycap sticker. I am the later.
Today my Doctor is trying some kind of "nerve" pill to see if the pain in my back can be calmed down.
Before any of you think this is some sort of plee for simpethy, IT IS NOT!!!
As I tell people, "I just have a broken back, some people are parolized". or "it's just pain, it's not cancer". I pray for all those who have it worse than me.

My Favorite Christmas Songs

Christmas time is the best time of the year for me! And Christmas music is my favorite of all music! A side from the conventional/ traditional Christmas music, I have a list of music that really gets me into the Christmas Spirit:

1. "All alone on Christmas" by Darlene Love
2. "Step into Christmas" by Elton John
3. "Father Christmas" by Greg Lake (this song sends chills up and down my spine)
4. "Christmas time" by Bryan Adams

Home Sweet Home

Harmon Village-Quonset Huts

Some of us, when we first arrived on Guam, moved to Harmon village. You know, moved into one of those Quonset Huts that was a former WWII military barracks before upgrading our residence to Dean's Circle. I remember my brothers & I would venture into the boonies and find unoccupied Quonset Huts covered with jungle and petrified sand bags surrounding them. We would explore the interiors of these huts, and often find some relict's left behind from WWII Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen or Marines (perhaps even Coastguards men?).

I wonder if any of these Quonset Huts are still there? Last I looked on Google Earth, the Huts are not visible, but the roads look like they are still there...but becoming very overgrown by vegetation.

A fine place to swim...

Passport To Adventure

I have TiVo and had programed it to record any show with Guam in it. My local PBS station has started showing the Passport To Adventure Series with the one about Guam and it recorded today. I just watched a few minutes of it, it was cool to hear Johnny's music on it...will save it for when I have some time to relax and really enjoy watching it.

Subaru

We are expecting a massive snow storm in New York tomorrow. Can't wait to try out our Subaru Forester in the 8" to 10" inches of snow we are expecting to get! We got the Subaru last year. Only drove it once in snow, to the super market, last winter. When my wife came out of the super market looking for me and the car, she found that I had driven the Forester to the top of a big snow mountain in the parking lot. She asked why I didn't just park it in a cleared parking space like a normal person. I told her that I didn't have too, (with a big grin)!

I only bring this up, because I remember just before Mat Kalb left for the Army, I went with him to a Subaru dealer in Guam. Mat was considerings buying a Subaru for his Mom while he was in the Army. (Mat did you ever get her the car?). From then on I always asumed that Subaru's were great vehicles. Now I own one, I'll let you all know how it preforms after tomorows winter storm!

The 'Pathway down to Pago Bay'

There was a pathway behind some ones house that lead to Pago Bay. I remember taking it often with friends, but also more often alone when I skipped screw-all (school). I often ventured off the pathway to explore. I found some interesting stuff, like WWII ammunition and creepy creatures. Hmmm, just a memory that I just remembered!

Bus Stop

I have noticed recently where I live in New York, 'bus stops', similar to the one we had at Dean's Circle, are popping up in most neighborhoods. (Now you are suppose to hear the music from the "Twilight Zone")!

A Quiver of One

Surfin Hawaii back in the early 80s.

The only board I have now, is my 1989 6'8" Ben Aipa, T&C tri-fin, which hasn't seen the ocean in a very long time. I'm not sure if it would even still float if I got on it today. Like heavy dude!

More of Dave's family

This one's for you Ric.
I would like to introduce my wife Sarah and grand-daughter Jewel.

Jeff Jones - North Shore Oahu action

I met up with Jeff Jones (younger of the 2 Jones Boys) this past weekend, at his super beautiful home on Oahu's North Shore. Dang ! Jeff totally blew me away, being so tall ... he's 6'6" and quite the stud-meister. Also met his beautiful wife Kathy.
We will be meeting up again in April 2008 with his brother Robert Jones, who'll be here from Florida. Hopefully we'll be able to all tow into some incredible waves that won't chew us up too much....a little, but not too much. The swells should still be around in April.

It was really the best feeling to see Jeff again, after 33 years. Sunset Point was quite the spot, as was Ted's Bakery ... the place for some coconut pastries !

Jeff, thanks for being so cool....as you always were. I missed hangin' with you Brah!

Home From The War

My stepson got back to the States yesterday afternoon after being deployed to Iraq for the last 15 months. I'm so relieved that he is safe, but I'm sure changed in many ways. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. His dad and sister are flying to Texas this am to spend the weekend with him. I'll get to see him when he and his family come to Florida for Christmas in a couple of weeks.

Agana Bay Mystery; the little island, gray haired lady

Does any one remember the little island in Agana Bay, just inside of the reef, on the Tamuning side? The tale went that there was an old lady with gray hair that lived on that little island.

Recent Carlson Pics

Left to right- Clay, Patty Jo, Me, Linh and Chovin. We've been eating at PIC for Thanksgiving for the last few years. For those that haven't been here for awhile, PIC is where the old Contenental Hotel was. We go play at PIC once in awhile. They have quite a few things to do there.

This was at Kings restaurant today. Linh was so cold she had to cover up with a napkin. I hope she doesn't check the blog. She won't be happy to see it online but I thought it was cute.

what was that game called?

at the bus stop, in the morning. (red rover, red rover, won't u come over). had to try to break through a line of kids on the the other side. If u got through, u could take one back, If they caught u, you were part of their team.....LOL so funny how this stuff comes back. It was our version of survivor until the bus got there.

Time to loosen it up a bit.....

Feeling a little uptight bloggers? Maybe this will help.

Cindy...Got the goods!

Thanks, got the seeds to make red rice! I am out of town now, but as soon as I get home I will brew up the red rice. Thank you so, so much! This means the world to me! You can have my first born and my 401K!

Don't take myself too seriously

Giving me all kinds of hand gyrations and the bird, I chased him. I was pissed. Stopping behind him at a red light waited for him to give me atanbaba (dirtylook) in the rear veiw mirror.
By this time I saw the humour, waved and smiled. His shoulders shook with laughter and he waved back.

Fire In The Hole!

I've been wanting to tell this story for a while. One of the dumbest things (among a long list) I have ever done.
One Boring summer evening in deans circle, Deanboy and I were, bored. As we walked around the block, we stopped at the drainage grate at the corner of Changs, across from Calbs. One of us had a pack of matches, and decided to try to build a fire at the bottom of the drainage catch basin. We collected sticks, paper and Iron wood needles for the burn, and piled them up at the bottom. We tossed match after match down the hole, but couldn't get it to burn. We lit paper, tossed it down, no luck. Exhausted I had an idea. Deanboy and i went behind my house. picked up a gallon (glass A&W rootbeer ) jug of gasoline, and poured down the hole. Surely this would get this fire to burn. We lit a match and threw it down the hole, no luck. so we lit paper, threw it down, no luck. try after try, no fire. I lit the whole pack of matches, tossed it down, no fire. We were perplexed.
As we sat on the curb next to the hole, saddened, bored and wondering what to do next.
BOOOOM! The ground shook, the grate lifted up as a flame shot 10 feet in the air. We went running.
The glass jug caught fire and was rolling down the street towards the Shooks driveway.
scared to death I ran after it . Then "Haw Haw I'm going to tell Dad Ha Ha" came from the bushes across the street. My bro Chris was there watching us the whole time.
How stupid we were. We were lucky we didn't have our faces over that grate when it went off. Deanboy, sorry for putting you in such danger, however as you all remember so well, Boring nights at Deans Circle brought out the best...stupid, in all of us.
Chris never told dad...I don't think.

Net Lingo

Ok, I have to admit too, I am unfamiliar with all of the text lol, rft, lbt ru, abcdefg.
So for all of you like me, go to www.netlingo.com. Its a good site to figure out what some are saying. Better yet,. Just write words like normal people. Some of us are still trying to fugure out how to use a computer. lol

I'm tryin to remind myself (and sometimes it aint easy), of all the things I should be thankful for... great childhood. wonderful parents, who loved me unconditionly. A sister and a brother, who always loved me, but may not always liked me. and four beautiful sons. and lest I forget my boyfriend Kurtis who helped me care for mom and dad over the last four years. oh and can't forget my baby kitty Lambchop, who loved mom and still keeps my spirits up when I come home.

A funeral for a friend

My brother Ric and his wife Teresa lost a close friend Darrell. He was a Police officer in New York. He was killed in a traffic accident. We should remember the others involved and injured in the accident. Ric and Teresa are helping with the funeral.

For the sake of keeping this on an up note, as did Pat, Cindy, and Robert, I will tell a funny story of Ric when we were younger.

Ric once told me, "If you want to inpress the ladies, just put a sock down your pants".
I just wish he had told me to put it in the front, not the back of my pants.

Okay, I made it up!

And the winner is...

Who's Tat #1
This was kind of a trick question. Both the boob and tattoo belong to my other half Ylana. The irony is this is the same panther design my Dad had on his arm. Cindy and Pat lose points on this one.

Who's Tat #2
This would be me. Cindy gets bonus points for the "big bicep" remark.

Who's Tat #3
Based on some of your comments, it would appear Doug has the sexiest ankles on the blog. Cindy hit this one out of the park.

I just got a very surprising email this morning and I could not wait to share it with everyone here.

Mushrooms on Guam

I've noticed a set of mushrooms growing out of wood in front of my door. They start growing throughout the night and then shriver to nothing when the sun rises. These fungi live for 12 hours and everynight I see new ones. I think we're lucky to have more time than that. Just an opinion:)

This one's for you Nancy

When I spoke with her the other night, one of the first things Nancy asked me was if I had any word from or pictures of Clay. She said something like, "I used to be so in love with that sweet, hot, sexy man". Forgive me Nancy if I mis-quoted you, but since you asked, I went back through the blog and consolidated all the Clayton Dean shots for you. I'm not positive, but I think he even posted a tight end shot of himself...for all you girls who were madly in love with him back in those teeny-bopper days. C'mon Clay, I know you have some more, the girls are just too shy to ask.

Welcome Amy

I see we have a new face on here today. Amy, I can't tell you how great it is to finally get one of you Sicklers onboard. Your family is such a big part of the Circle's history that this blog seemed empty without you. I look forward to hearing about your life's journey.

Does anyone know Brian Leon Guerrero or Loretto Vitor

My boss at Philips also grew up on Guam, but on the other side of the island. He went to Dededo HS.

Just wanted to share this family photo with you all, taken in 1975. It was just before I left Guam, headed to Sacramento for my junior year of high school. I wasn't about to go back to GW, as things were getting way too violent. Check out Chris's eyes. If looks could kill...

The Sicklers have been Located

I was just falling asleep last night when my cell phone rang. As I was deciding who could be calling and whether I wanted to talk to them or not, I looked at the display screen and saw the name Nancy. As my heart pounded within my chest I answered. The sweetest voice greeted me and asked, "is this Dave Larson?" Sure enough, I had Nancy Sickler on the line. She is living up in Oregon, as is Amy, Don and their parents. Wendy is in New Jersy. Nancy said hello to all of you, and she is excited about joining us on the blog. She does not own a computer but said that Amy is a computer freak. They are supposed to email me so that I can get them signed onto our site. I have her phone number if anyone would like to call and encourage her to come hang out with us again. I also have Wendy's phone number but she has not returned my calls yet, which according to Nancy is quite normal. She only speaks to her about once a year and Wendy seldom returns her calls either. So keep your fingers crossed gang, we are closer than ever to getting back in touch with the Sicklers. I owe it all to our good friend Alice. She had the addresses and phone numbers all along.... thanks much Alice, I appreciate your help.

Veteran's Day 2007

I would like to remember my Dean's Circle Dad today, and pay tribute to a Navy Submariner who proudly served his country during the Korean War Era. He inspired me to become the person I am today and taught me how to live life through the good times and bad. My Dad was a great husband and father who led by example and always let it be known who was in charge of the family. He was an innovator who always loved the challenge of his next project, whether it be building a submarine in the basement or a methane burning engine on his VW van. I know my brothers and sister feel the same way I do about our Dad, he was always there for us. May his memory live on.
