Follow the money

Chris Matthews is a "journalist" for MSNBC who openly declares his job to be to make Obama's presidency a success. Before the elections, it was obvious the whole network was in the tank for the democrats.

MSNBC is owned by GE.

GE manufactures medical equipment, healthcare IT, energy infrastructure (Smart Grid)and has finacial wing.

How much do you think they stand to gain by the recovery act? It is one thing for companies to lobby congress to their benefit, it is quite another when the so-called free press does everything they can to ensure an outcome to their advantage.

Remember what we used to say when cops drove by when we'd be sitting on the curb or at the bus stop on a friday night? "I smell bacon".
Soooey!

Ric Larson said...

Yep, remember that all too well! Especially when the copper stopped and said "who's our daddy". Had to change my shorts after that!

mat said...

But wait theres more folks! Theyre taking our money(taxes)and giving it away to local governments, corporations and all kinds of phony baloney shit. Oh sure there's a few decent programs in the bill(yes RAC and Doug I have seen the bill but it's not worth rehashing you guys won right)then after maybe 1 or 2 years when the economy is looking up which it would anyways then Blammo they'll raise our taxes to pay for the whole thing. If Obama gets re-elected then great the whole thing continues more of the same. If he doesn't get re-elected then WTF right. After all it's all Bush's fault. That bastard.Smoke and mirrors folks FOLLOW THE MONEY DAMNITT!

mat said...

Hahaha Ric, Thats why Pete and I never were more than arms length from our bikes. Those fat bastards could never catch us.Too many Bonelos(donuts).Get it theres a pork theme going on here.

Ric Larson said...

Mat, Actually the copper would say to me, "who's your daddy"? I always yelled out "Mr. Larson, officer sir". He always left me alone after that. He was a tall white copper.

I think the copper knew Mr. Larson on a personal basis. And with me also having the last name Larson, he always left me alone. Thanks Dave, your Dad knew people in high places! But still, he always read me the riot act.

Sean, please keep us/me/we all updated on this stuff! You sure do know your stuff!

mat said...

Yeh Ric that was probably the Larsons friend Paul Taruso he was a cop for a while I think. It;s nice to know people for sure. Everytime Sam and I would go somewhere and get pulled over we would invoke Dr Sparks name and all would be good. All police cadets had to take psycology and Dr Sparks was their instructor. How sweet was that?

Ric Larson said...

Mat, sure wish I was thinking like you and Pete. Always wanted to out run a copper, just for the fun of it!

I must have missed where Chris Matthews openly declared his career prime directive was to engender a successful Obama presidency. I did not realize he wielded such awesome authority. MSNBC leans to the left, that is not open to serious debate. That there's actually a market for such shameless bias might suggest that there is a segment of viewers that desires to see at least some validity be lent a liberal viewpoint.
As to your point that perhaps their editorializing has an ulterior, profit based motive. Sounds almost Republican to me.

Sean said...

Sure, Doug, only republicans are interested in profit...

Matthews at the inauguration: “Well, it sure as hell helps to be on MSNBC today. Let’s talk straight here: This is the network that has opened its heart to change. To change and its possibilities. Let’s be honest. These people watch this network out here.”

MSNBC replaced Matthews and Olberman from the anchoring duties becuase of all the flack they were getting for being, well, democrate flacks.

November 6:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Yeah, well, you know what? I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new presidency work, and I think that --

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Is that your job? You just talked about being a journalist!

MATTHEWS: Yeah, it is my job. My job is to help this country

mat said...

Doug, you are correct sir. the right wingers always want their man to win and the left wingers want theirs to win.To bad those of us that just try to be common sense are stuck wih it. Now don't get me wrong, I definitely lean more to the right. But it is true that the mainstream media is left leaning and pulled out all the stops to get Obama elected. I don,t think it was to try to effect policy as some conservatives believe but rather just to prove that they still could. After losing so much advertising revenue due to so many people getting their news from the internet they had to claim back what they saw as rightfully theirs. I'll be the first to admit that I hear plenty from the mainstream news sources dogging on Obamas cabinet or any missteps he makes. But that certainly wasn't the case during the election.Sad isn't it that now we're stuck with the results of their social experiment. I guess we're all just a bunch of lab rats eh? Shit only if you choose to be. Not me folks. Some times you just got to stand up and be counted. OK thats my rant..Peace out!

Hey guys, I have just one wish for our next reunion (hope planning is in some sort of stage, some where?). I would just love for the Doug'ster, RAC'miester, Dave the divine, Mat the mega master, and myself the alien elf, to sit around a warm fire on a sandy beach in florida or in a warm cabin, sipping, drinking or slamming down our favorate bevorages...disguissing all that is on this blog. What about it?

Ric Larson said...

And I must mention, that my brother Sean should be the MC!

mat said...

Yea we need a reunion. Maybe we can set up a comitee and get a federal grant to fund it we could say it's for furthering cultural diversity in U.S. territories based on developmental differnces and acute chemical and sociological experimentations. We could slip it right through and nobody would know.Hahaha

mat said...

Hell we could even get them to buy the food shooot balut. I'll cook!

Ric Larson said...

Mat, there you go thinking again! Keep thinking! Good job!

Doug said...

So what? He says he wants to help the country, good for him. Rush Limbaugh openly hopes for Obama to fail. Is that helpful? Former Bush administration minion Karl Rove (they of the no-bid defense contracts) plies his trade at Fox Network. Again, if your point is that Matthews is openly biased for the President I yield it to you.
There's no shortage of "journalists" with an agenda.
To ascribe Chris Matthews' Obama love fest to some sinister smart grid/light bulb manufacturer conspiracy against the masses seems almost... gulp...Democratic.

Doug said...

Drinking and bullshitting around the fire sounds good to me. I don't think you're allowed to have fires on the beach here in FL though. Seems our Republican governor put the kabosh on beach fires for fear someone might set the Gulf on fire.
Charlie Christ is an FSU alum and so he's a Seminole but Jesus does he need to lose that spray on tan or what.
I second Seans nomination as MC.
Deans Circle Blogspot by-laws dictate that the MC supply the booze:) Make mine Jack Daniels.

Oh and Doug, there is a problem with a reporter being biased. Their job is just to report period. Look, everybody has an opinion but if your job is just to report the news then thats what you should do.If your doing editorial then yea go for it. But don't pretend to be a newsperson and your constantly editorializing see? Rush isn't a reporter or a news man. He editorializes and throws his opinion around like nobodys buisness. Thats his job. Its what he does and he does it very well. Look at actors and entertainers. Their job is to make movies and record music and entertain us after a long day at work. I don't want to come home and see them on TV ranting about politics(left or right)see? It's simple. Chris Matthews is some piece of work I don't know how to make it simpler. When he was in Journalism 101 and his professor asked him why wanted to be a journalist do you think he said "I want to change the world" and his prof said "Excellent".These guys are so full of themselves it's pathetic.

rac said...

So what's your point? Are you guys advocating a "fairness doctrine" so you can get a fair shake on some 2-bit cable TV channel... really?

rac said...

Welcome to the real world people. Since you guys have had your heads buried in the sand these last 8 years I guess it would come as a surprise that big companies try to influence government decisions. And now that you're finally trekking down the money trails you may want to peek down a few back alleys in your own neighborhood... let us know what you find. ;)

rac said...

Here, let me help you with some of the street signs:
HALIBURTON
EXON MOBILE
ENRON

Sean said...

RAC - when you say "you guys have had your heads buried in the sand" are you talking about Ric, Mat and myself? or is this "you guys = republicans". 'cause it sounds like your getting personal here.

(why argue about the issues when you can just shoot the messenger).

Sean said...

Big companies trying to influence government decisions is nothing new. The problem comes in when the "free press" becomes a propaganda machine for a political party. Control the news and control the minds. This is fascism.

It is interesting, RAC, that you would conclude that us guys are "advocating a fairness doctrine". As conservatives we don't believe that government is the answer to all problems. Certainly not that the feds should interfere with our freedom of speech. Rather, we're trying to point out that sometimes the news media isn't news at all but rather commentary, opionion and - yes - propaganda.

Doug said...

Matt,
Chris Matthews is not a news anchor or really even a reporter. His show is called Hard Ball. It is not unreasonable to expect an agenda or bias to come from one's own show. Much like Glenn Beck Or Lou Dobbs or any of the others.
From my limited and foggy memory of college I can tell you that college professors can be some of the most biased and political agenda driven people on the planet. They have a captive audience dependent on them for their success and they will say pretty much whatever they like.
Even if Chris Matthews were an actual reporter it's unrealistic to expect complete impartiality. Everyone has personal bias that has been shaped by upbringing, background and life experiences. It's what makes us human.

Doug said...

Sean,
well you and I are in agreement that the "news" is quite often biased, slanted, agenda driven snippets crammed in to a 30 minute show minus commercials. Watch the network news tonight, Count the commercials for prescription drugs. How tolerant do you think these advertisers would be of extensive reporting by that network of say, price manipulation and fixing of prescription brand.
It's my opinion that it is the duty of all citizens to be informed by exposing themselves to as many points of view as possible. And yes that includes FOX and MSNBC. And then use your God given brain to come to some hopefully reasonably close neighborhood to the truth.
And then w can start a whole different thread on what is the truth.

Sean said...

The MSNBC site touts Chris Matthews as a newsman with a news show:

Chris Matthews hosts “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” Monday through Friday on MSNBC (5 and 7 PM EST). Matthews is also the host of “The Chris Matthews Show,” a syndicated weekly *news* program produced by NBC News and distributed by NBC Universal Television Distribution. Mr. Matthews is a regular commentator on NBC’s “Today" show.

A television *news anchor* with remarkable depth of experience, Matthews has distinguished himself as a broadcast *journalist*, newspaper bureau chief, Presidential speechwriter, and best-selling author.

Sean said...

Doug, you are right: we are each responsible for sorting out the truth for ourselves. Unfortunately, personal responsibility has gotten the short shrift in American society of late. (Aren't we also responsible for how much we drink, eat, smoke, spend, borrow and procreate?)

Unfortunately, I would say that a large marjority of our population gets all of their news/information from a single source - probably NBC/CBS/ABC or one of the all news stations like FOX/CNN/MSNBC. We also use the same 30 second TV spots to decide who to elect as we do to decide "coke or pepsi".

rac said...

Yes, I was referring to Republicans in general. I didn't hear any of "you" questioning the impropriety of Halliburton's no bid contracts. In fact, when one of "us" did we were accused of being unpatriotic. I'm not trying to get personal - just trying to point out the hypocrisy.

Dave said...

Latest Headlines on ALL the News Networks: UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IS GOING BROKE, HEADED FOR BANKRUPTCY. No big surprise there right, we'll just invest in more printing presses and cut down another forest. "I, am the "ETERNAL" optimist" is being plastered all over the networks. Obviously, some people actually believe it.

mat said...

RAC, heres the deal man,if you want to go back to when the war started then ok. When you get attacked you don't tell your attacker "Wait,I need to get some bids for equipment and weapons before I retaliate". Thats ludicrus.Halliburton is a huge global company and were geared up and ready to go when the war started. You're a veteran just like a lot of us and to pretend you dont know how it works is just wrong! You "Run What You Brung" to the marble game. We got attacked and we responded with all our might. We(republicans) get accused of accusing the media of a conspiracy theory as far as the media is concerned but listen to what your shoveling dude.We get it.Bush is gone,Cheney is gone,Rove is gone get over it. Your man won deal with it.The point of this thread is all the pork. The Democrats could have just passed it and been done with it. They didn't need Republicans to sign onto it.But when it fails and it will they want to say Aha the republicans approved of it to!So sad.You can say that there was a budget surplus or a deficit when Bush came into office. It doesn't matter. When you get attacked you retaliate. You don't go to the fed or congress and say"Can we afford to attack back?"We can debate all day long for who is responsible for the housing and stock market melt down but tell me truthfully, how much was the war on terror adressed in the stimulous package? It's like it was ignored in all hopes that it would just go away.I wonder what our troops think about that.Out of sight out of mind eh?Shit I'm out for now I need to drink a cold one or two or three.

Ric Larson said...

Mat i'm joining you on the 'cold ones dude'!

I just heard the Prez say that it is our "collective responsablilty" to bail out the morgage situation.

Why must I help pay for some one who can't afford their morgage? I wasn't there in the bank with them when they signed their name on the dotted line. Why must my hard worked dollars help them pay for a morgage that they probably could'nt offord to begin with? Heck, I don't even own my own home yet and I have to help others pay for theirs? Communism is here.

mat said...

Shoot Balut Ric,lets drink to that.

Mat, you just brought tears to my eyes! I am a vet too, and was in NY when we got attacted. I am currently in the IRR and volenteered to get activated. But was told that there are younger LT's in the Infanty that were better prepared to go. Sucks being old.

Ric Larson said...

Yeah man!

rac said...

"how much was the war on terror addressed in the stimulus package?" ... how about how much was the war on terror addressed in invading Iraq? You don't really buy into that bullshit story do you? Or should I say which bullshit story did you buy into because the "reason" we invaded Iraq kept changing. Iraq did not attack us, period. In truth, Saudi Arabia had a lot more to do with not only funding the terrorist but supplying the actual terrorist to hijack the planes. How come we didn't invade them? Or maybe we could have taken the hundreds of billions of dollars we wasted to rebuild a desert wasteland (Iraq) and spent that money on our own country and her defenses. So yes, Bush and Cheney are still relevant. They are relevant because this country may never recover from their greed and corruption. It's called causality... look it up.

And BTW, it was the other thread that dealt with pork - this one is on media bias or something like that... I think. ;)

rac said...

Reasons (according to Bush) why we invaded Iraq: "First, it was weapons of mass destruction. Then it was because Saddam was supposedly behind 9/11. Then it was because al-Qaeda were supposed to have established bases in Iraq. Then it was to bring democracy to the Iraqis."

So which one was it?

rac said...

And Ric, I agree with your assessment of the home mortgage bailout. It's one thing to adjust the restrictions for Freddie and Fanny to refinance, but I draw the line on using tax dollars to help people pay their mortgage. If you made a bad investment then you should suffer the consequences. Or maybe we should subsidize every one's 401K losses too.

Ric Larson said...

Or maybe because he broke so many UN resolutions?

rac said...

As has North Korea... and they really do have WMD. Why didn't we invade them?

Ric Larson said...

Did they violate so many UN resolutions as IRAN did?

Ric Larson said...

Sorry, Not IRAN but IRAQ. But IRAN could be next with the proper leadership!

mat said...

yea RAC This thread is on media bias but thats how we ended up here.Saddam Husein(Iraq)was sponsoring terrorist training camps,he was allowing them and financing them.He was actively recruiting homicide bombers to blow shit up and paying their families for their lives. This is true.Mind you not western devils but heir own people.Still are. Ooh your really hurting my feelings mister homicide bomber your killing your own people.Hahaha.Again, theres no question that all of Saudi Arabia could give a shit less about us but two wrongs don't make a right.Because of our immediate and decisive response against Iraq Libya gave it up and said screw this, this Bush guys serious. Was that a bad thing?Does the end justify the means?Uh yeah in this case it did. This is serious shit.We are talking about life and death shit here.Get it?Whose side are you on?I'm an American and I could give a crap if any other country liked me or approved of how I presented myself. If Hamas, or Pakistan,China, etc, etc, wants to blow their own people up or commit atrocities against their own people,so what. But if you screw with us you will pay.Back to Saudi Arabia. We should blow them from here to eternity. Why don't we?OIL!Why can't we get our own?We sell offshore leases to other countries to drill OUR oil.But our govt wants us to drive Priuses.Screw that.I Remember being in 10th grade and my teacher saying "save the planet man". Fucking hippy. Now look where we're at.They said in 20 years we're all going to be dead man.Yea whatever.Hahahaha.

Ric Larson said...

RAC'ster, I am an easy going dude, in general. I see eye-to-eye with both sides of the isle. It is good to agree with you on certain things (like the morgage bail out)! You are good man, and my wife and I loved the truck that you drove to Vegas BabY!(vehicle). That is our next car buy!

So RAC'ster. You were the one to head up the previous Reunion. Any chance of you heading a commitee for the next reunion?

rac said...

Good point, maybe we should have invaded them too.

So as you see, that argument holds no water. Especially when it was not the initial reason given for going to war. I repeat - the world was told we were invading Iraq because we had hard evidence they had WMD, even when most experts in the field said they did not. The administration later had to admit they were wrong and Iraq did not have WMD. We went to war on false pretenses and now we are paying the price... $3,000,000,000,000 to be exact.

mat said...

Oh and while we're kind of on the subject. How much money from the stimulous package is for homeowners?75 bil? Didn't the prez say that there would be imediate assistance to 6mil homeowners facing forclosure?Come on do the math.8grand apiece?Thems some cheap mortgages.Hahahaha.Yea whatever. At least with Bush if you think he was corrupt or whatever you know what?He cut my taxes.I didn,t care what he did with his share.I wanted mine!Hahahaha.

rac said...

So Saddam was blowing up his own people, why do you care? We wasted a lot of resources in the wrong place any let the real conflict in Afghanistan start to slip away.

Who's side am I on? Really? Are you kidding me? Fuck you.

Mat... you go boy! And keep on driving that gas guzzling Monte Carlo. If you guys get a chance to look at the March edition of popular science magazine, it will crack you up. All the "green" inventions and modes of transportation are absolutely ridiculous. Big wind mills on top of plastic cars, a 4 man, human powered row-boat car, a contraption you wear when you walk, with a hand crank, a solar umbrella, motion generators etc. that charge a battery pack while you walk or run, so when you get home you can power up your I-pod or your lap-top. All being sold as "the way" that we all should and will live in the future. I know... off topic again, sorry. Hey RAC, don't get mad man... this is only the blog and we can't beat Mat up like we used to when he came onto the wrong side of the block. Freedom of speech and all... you know, the fairness doctrine... you can handle it...

rac said...

No, when you question my patriotism you cross the line.

mat said...

Like my kids say today"peace to all my home slices"I think the lesson to be learned is that we are all very pasionate in our opinions and politics and to all my "Peeps" word to your mother.Hahahah.Dave,I just changed the oil and we're getting about 18 MPDD(miles per dead dinosaur)!Poor guy (the dinosaur)if only he could see the joy he brings to my families life!Hahahaha.

rac said...

Yes Dave, there are some silly inventions out there. Have you ever seen some on the contraptions we came up with on our way to inventing an airplane? It's all part of the process. Outside of the silliness though, I can assure you some of our most accomplished scientists are focusing on renewable energy... I know, I work for one of them.

RAC, I love ya man.We need another reunion. We didn't get to really spend any time together last time(I'll bring to the Jack Daniels).Peace Bro!

Hey, I just found my old solar powered calculator. Must be twenty years old. And guess what - it still works. Best part is I've never had to change the battery. ;)

Of course it can't measure up to the iPhone which, IMHO, is the greatest gadget ever made. If only I didn't have to carry that damn solar umbrella.

mat said...

Hey Robert,I have one of those too.I truly believe that we are the masters of our own destiny. You know I think that we all have a vested interest in alternative energy. In Colorado the going price for aluminum cans is 23cents a pound.Thats reeealy low man.But its based on the market. If you want people to save energy, make it worth their while.I think that the Feds could probably mandate the price of recyclables but in the long run the only driving factor would be that the Feds mandated it.
You gotta want to do it and be shown how you can save money doing it.Remember when we were younger and we would collect pop bottles and take them to Cruz store? It would pay for our smokes and a drink or some pickled papaya.I think most(probably 75-90%)of Americans care about our environment and would do anything to help it if we truly thought that we were in danger of being extinct.Benita and I are avid fishermen(persons)and there is nothing that we hate more than assholes that leave their trash behind when they go outdoors. I hate assholes.I know that this is kind of off the point of the thread but just know that I share your feelings for the planet I just have a different philosopohy for how to take care of it.I guess what I'm trying to say is that we realy aren't that different we just have different views how to achieve our goals. If you ever come out west to Colorado call me and we'll party!

rac said...

In Michigan they have a 10c deposit on bottles and cans. As far as I'm concerned it's the dumbest thing ever. Sure the sides of the roads are clean, but go in any work place, store, and (some) peoples homes and you will see nothing but old nasty rotting bottles and cans. All because folks too afraid to throw them away and too lazy the bring them to the nasty ass recycle place. They couldn't get away with that shit down south I tell you... the cockroaches would eat them alive. I guess my point is I agree with you Mat. We should take care of our surroundings because it's the right thing to do - not because government tells us to.

rac said...

Russian astrophysicist Nicolai Kardashev theorised that advanced civilisations must be grouped according to three Types: I, II and III. The deciding factor was in their mastery of, respectively, planetary, stellar and galactic forms of energy usage. We currently are a moderate Type 0 civilisation. If we are to advance, and therefor survive, it is imperative we continue to explore all forms of energy. Imagine what we can discover with a million years of technology under our belt.
