David Brooks on Jindal's Rebuttal

I think Brooks makes a good point about the role of Federal government in the economy. In a previous post I wrote how American chip maker Micron has lost 1/2 of its workforce at its headquarters in Idaho. True the losses are due in part to the current economic situation but they can also be attributed to government intervention. Not our government mind you, rather South Korea's.

Samsung Electronics has for a number of years had the unpresidented backing of its government's support (mostly in the form of financing). And because of this they are the undisputed king of the semiconductor industry (even larger than Intel). Samsung is so successful they were relatively unaffected by Asia's last economic melt down.

The story of the memory market is an interesting one. About 12 years ago there were a large number of companies making a sweet profit from these simple chips. Then, with the support of their government, Samsung and fellow Korean chip maker Hynix flooded the market with cheap memory driving the price into the dirt. Almost all competitors were driven from the field leaving Samsung with an 80% market share. The only American company to survive at the time was Micron. And now I'm beginning to wonder how long that will last.

I guess my point is that government can play a positive role is the success of a nation's economy. It's just a matter of who's government and who's economy.

I learned in N.H.Be American, buy American.Yet,I've also come to learn about supply and demand.I haven't written lately because of the anti-Obamaism on this blog. That's putting him down, why because he's half black/half white?Democrat?Wait to see if the sky is indeed falling first...then scream...not you RAC. Just saying how disgusted I am with some who almost want to kill him before he's had a chance. That's All.

Yes, I was living in Korea (South Korea, drl) when the computer scene just exploded in the market from one day to the next. Everyone became Tech savvy over night probably because the Internet was so cheep. Samsung had backing but they also had competive drive. When I first went to Korea in 85 Korean products were not very good but now I think they are very good. Their cell phones are great and I still have a laptop compact from around 1996 that still works.

So why the silence on this Jindal dude? I mean, this was the official GOP response to the President's address and I can't get a single comment from any of you on the right? What gives?

OK RAC.first off let me say that I finally got internet service at home and my computer is really old and slow. It's great for simple blogging but if I try reading these videos that get posted it goes real slow.I suffered through it and heres my thought. Brooks is trying to say that Jindal should get on board because when the economy comes around which it will, the repubican voters will remember this and he needs to think about getting re-elected so the GOP can continue their march to regain power. I don't think a lot of people realize that The GOP has divided into 2 sub parties republicans and conservatives.Jindal is a conservative and if you listen to conservative radio or TV then you would know that they are against the stimulous package in general. Is he(Jindal) standing on principal or being politically savvy in hopes that Reagan conservatism will win in the next election cycle? I don't know. I think that if you don't need the money or you are a good manager(which is what govs are supposed to be)and you are confident that you can weather the storm without contributing to the deficit then go for it. I have lived in Colorado 14 years now and every road here it seems like it has been under construction/improvement non-stop since since I have been here. Our roads are never really in bad shape to start with. If you go to a city council meeting or call you districts state representative why, the answer is "it's ok its federal highway money" so the feds are making it available but that doesn't mean you have to take it. I'm tired of always waiting in traffic in what is supposed to be small town America. I know to some of you this may sound like a simplistic view, but I think gov. should be simple. Ok you asked.

Ok so Joanna asked where the hippies went? Maybe this is as close as I can come to being a hippy. I don't need "the man" to tell me how to fix my life or throw a bunch of money my way. Just leave me alone man!hahaha.

LIMBAUGH: [T]he people on our side are really making a mistake if they go after Bobby Jindal on the basis of style. Because if you think - people on our side I'm talking to you - those of you who think Jindal was horrible, you think - in fact, I don't ever want to hear from you ever again. ... I've spoken to him numerous times, he's brilliant. He's the real deal.
