Upon Further Review

So okay you know how a few weeks back right after the Republican Convention I had said that I could actually envision Sarah Palin being President of the United States?  I hereby retract that sentiment. With extreme prejudice.  A Pentacostal end timer that fires librarians that refuse to ban books she doesn't like (but never even bothered to read herself) living across the street from the White House?  So suppose McCain is elected and God forbid he checks out during the term and so this Palin  lady assumes the office and then what's next? Snake handling & speaking in tongues in the Oval Office?  Don't take my word for it, read up on her. Read what people that know her, that worked with her, that MANAGED her campaigns have to say about her.  This chick is certifiable.

Jeez Doug just because she's a good Christian doesn't mean she's gonna be a bad president. Someone has to be an Atheist to run the country? I don't understand that logic. The Clintons went to church every Sunday and the Liberals never said a word. Now we have just a Vice Presidential candidate who has strong religious convictions and she's evil? Wow talk about double standards. I suppose if she burnt a bible and performed an abortion on live TV she'd be alright to lead the country. I don't care if she handles snakes or anything else for that matter. As long as it's on her time and her dime.

Speaking of handling snakes. She is quite a looker. OK I'm not even going to finish that thought. hehhehhe

Where did I say anything about being an atheist, burning bibles or performing abortions before a live TV audience? Bit of a stretch there Matt. I don't care if you go to church or not really. Going to church proves nothing. In my humble opinion churches are full of some of the most judgmental, hypocritical and bigoted individuals around. I would tend to give more credence to one's actions and interactions with others.
You're right that she's free to practice whatever she'd like on her own dime absent harm to others. The danger of the self righteously pious holding executive power was self evident to the founding fathers. The recognition of this danger leads to one of the fundamental tenets of representative democracy, the separation of church and state. Most if not all of our Presidents have been what you could consider good Christians, regular church goers with normal human failings. This is perfectly fine, probably even preferable to have faith.
The line has to be drawn however when that faith becomes the preeminent guide in Presidential decision making. Forgoing constitution mandated responsibility and instead listening and acting on advice from your God is what you expect from a theocracy. You know, kinda' like Iran.

Doug, I know this thread is focused on Palin. How could you not focus on her...she's Smoke'n Hot!

I will not comment on religion. But I lived in Alaska for three years, and think I know the type of women she is, and I like what I see and hear.

But lets look at the real issue at hand, Obama vs. McCain. Obama has a 1/2 brother in Africa making the equivalent of one US dallor a month. Obama wont even send him 50 bucks, yet wants to help all those in poverty in the US of A. McCain actually helped some one in a 3rd world Country, Bangladesh...he adopted her.

Substance brother!

Respectfully...Ric

There was a time when we elected people based on a whole different set of criteria. They were the best America had to offer. They were the brightest among us, the best educated, and the most intelligent. Sadly, these traits are no longer held in esteem. We now elect people we most would like to have a beer with, or because they're "hot" enough to be a MILF. And then we act surprised when the country goes to shit ($700,000,000,000 bailout - wtf?)

Doug said...

Ric,
Well i was talking about Sarah Palin and the fear that I have that given her history her first priority would not be the upholding and defense of the Constitution Of The United States Of America.
But since we're talking McCain...so I wonder in which of his seven houses the "populist, maverick man of the people" does the adopted Bangaladeshi reside?
And speaking of substance, was it just me or did Sarah Palin pretty much ridicule Obama's record of public service during her address at the Republican convention. How can we really know of Palin's substance, or lack thereof, given her persistent avoidance of free and UNSCRIPTED exchange with the media? We hear whining from Limbaugh & Beck and the like about the liberal meanies picking on poor Sarah. Bullshit. The average contestant on American Idol has had as much scrutiny under fire as Sarah Palin. I really don't have to live in Alaska to have some knowledge of Sarah Palin any more than I need to live at the North Pole to have some knowledge of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
Please convince me that my concerns are unfounded and I will say more power to her. Put partisanship aside. Our concern should be preservation of the Republic and the liberties granted us by God and our forebears. Electing leaders with minimal scrutiny can lend itself to government by personal agenda.
End rant. Also submitted respectfully.

Doug,

Always good to read your comments! I agree with some of what you have to say, as I equally disagree with some what what you have to say as well.

But I do strongly agree "Perservation of the Republic and the Liberties granted us by God and our forebears"!

While in Alaska, I never venchered any where North than Fairbanks, or the Artic Circle. My lovely wife did go to Northpole, Alaksa, north of the Artic Circle, yet saddly she did not see a single raindeer with a blinking red nose :( (But I still believe in Santa)!

Ric Larson said...

RAC, I fully agree with what you have mentioned/ said...totally dude!!!(except for the fact that we have not yet voted for a 'Hot' Candidate! But I hope to soon) ;)!

I don't believe our Goverment (rather 'us' tax payers) have any business bailing out this situaltion. I say, "Let the economy take its course"!

If this bail-out takes place, the money; if it were to be distributed equally to all American families, it would come to about $400,000 per house hold. If given us ('the tax payers') the same aloted money instead of to the private investment companies, it would let the money flow upwards instead of it going downwards.

If the best America has to offer now is now running for election(s), we are in deep doo-doo! And I feel we are in deep doo-doo! Once in our recent history, we did have respectable folks running for 'public office(s)' (on both sides of the ticket), those days are like...'precambrian' history now.

And I must also mention, no matter who wins this election, as Americans...we need to stand behind our next President! Devided by polictical views, I still believe we are the best Country on the face of the Earth!

But what do I know?

I'm thinking right now that Sarah Palin is one of the best things to happen to TV in a while. Did anyone see her interview with Katie Couric? It was great. Like a SNL skit or something.
To paraphrase:
Couric: You have stated that being governor of Alaska gives you valuable experience in international relations, how so?
Palin: well...Alaska shares a maritime border with, well you know like a big powerful country, Russia... and when Putin rears his head where do you think the planes are coming from...and we have trade missions with them....and then there's Canada...
It's understandable that the McCain/Palin handlers want to limit Palins interaction with those pesky media people but dammit i want more. That is good stuff right there. A potential leader of the free world presenting herself like a high school freshman furtively delivering an oral report before her geography class.

Doug said...

By the by, conservative columnists George Will and Kathleen Parker are calling for Palins removal, voluntary or otherwise, as McCain's running mate.
I say don't do it Sarah! Show the world your decisive side. Skin a moose. Shoot some wolves from a helicopter. Ban some books. Cast a spell to protect us from witches and such.
McCain needs you to divert attention from his plummeting poll numbers. I need you because you make for great tv. Plus as Matt says you ain't hard on the eyes.

I watched the interview last night too Doug....Palin was way out of her league...like a deer caught in the headlights. I'm a reality show junkie and I can't believe how glued to the tube I've been lately with all this political stuff...best reality show out there.

Something that drives me crazy...I'll debate and I give my opinion and I like to think that I'm open minded enough that I'm willing to listen to another and even change my mind if I'm given a good enough reason to but I hate when someone just wants to argue and then they tell me they didn't watch the inverview, they're not going to watch the debate and are too busy to watch the news or read anything on the internet or the newspaper...I want to tell them to please not expect me to respect their opinion if they can't be bothered to pay attention to what's going on.

Someone (yes, sorry, an Obama supporter)sent this to me today:

Subject: I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic' and 'different.'

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you're an American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, and you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, then you're well- grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, help register 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, 8 years as a State Senator of a district of 750,000 people, chair the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people, sponsor 131 bills, and serve on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works, and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town of 7,000 people, 2 years as governor of a state of 650,000 people, you're qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, left your ill wife, and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age-appropriate sex education, including the use of birth control, you erode the fiber of American society.

If you staunchly advocate abstinence-only education, while your teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, you don't represent America's family values.

If your husband is called 'First Dude', has a DWI conviction, didn't register to vote until 25, and was a member of a group that advocated secession of Alaska from the USA, yours is the quintessential American family.

And, finally, if you're famous for your quick temper, you're the one to have your finger on the red nuclear button.

OK, much clearer now.

Mat,She's in essence burning books...remind you of a place in the states...sink or swim, you all will be damned. If we don't learn from the past, we're doomed to repeat it.Our forefather's saw that. There had to be a separation of church and State.

Sean said...

This is a common misconception about "separation of church and state". These words are not in the consititution, declaration or any of the amendments.

Rather, the 1st amendmend states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

Being a non-believer myself, it isn't like I'm advocating on the part of any beliefs. But, I do find that most of the zealots these days are actually atheists. I seem to get more preaching from them than any church.

I myself attended 4 different colleges befor I got my BSW. I washed dishes, mopped foors, was in ROTC, did college 'work study' and was in the PA National Guard... just to pay my way through school. I respect the fact that she went through all of those schools in order to graduate. What perseverance she must have!

rac said...

I agree Ric. I give her credit. At least she got her degree, something I did not (but then I'm not running for vice-president).

However, let me put this in perspective. If you were the head of a high tech company making super widgets and needed a new engineer to design the next generation of widgets, who would you hire? The engineer who graduated at the top of his class from MIT or the guy (or gal) who went to 5 different community colleges to get a degree in art history.

Somehow I think a law degree from the most prestigious law school in the world automatically makes him more qualified for a job that deals mostly in law.

And for the record, John McCain graduated in the bottom 5% of his class, which might explain why he was such a shitty pilot.

Robert@Sean,You're smart so keep talking...everyone has they're own opinion...let it be said!:)

ANCHORAGE -- Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago -- about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct -- the teacher said.

After conducting a college band and watching Palin deliver a commencement address to a small group of home-schooled students in June 1997, Wasilla resident Philip Munger said, he asked the young mayor about her religious beliefs.

Palin told him that "dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time," Munger said. When he asked her about prehistoric fossils and tracks dating back millions of years, Palin said "she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the tracks," recalled Munger, who teaches music at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and has regularly criticized Palin in recent years on his liberal political blog, called Progressive Alaska.

(somehow I don't think she would be a big supporter of the sciences)

Doug said...

Like I said, she's a laugh a minute. Don't quit Sarah. Your fresh perspective on reality is priceless.

rac said...

Actually, her comments about the dinosaurs may be precisely why McCain picked her. For a look at the statistics go here. Ol' John McCain might not be as dumb as he seems.

Doug said...

Oh I'm well aware she's not the only one around with her perception of the natural world.

rac said...

Yes Doug, living in Northern Florida I'm sure you have had some exposure to the anti-evolution crowd. Wasn't it in Georgia where they put a disclaimer on the science books?

Joanna said...

Yeah!!!

Doug said...

It's actually not bad here in Tallahassee. Two universities and a large community college gives this and Gainesville FL the highest per capita education levels in the state for whatever that's worth. The alternative viewpoint label would not fly in this county, at least not in a Science textbook.
Now you get out into the Panhandle and up to South GA and yes you will find those that have different ideas on things.
