Software came with my camera that will "stitch" multiple images together but there is other software available for download on the Internet. Images are usually shot from a tripod. Some people use a kind of measuring wheel so they know how far to swing the camera around. The canon G9 has a feature that helps you line up multiple images, so I don't need the wheel. This Quicktime VR movie was done with 13 images.
I have a professional photo friend that does it with only 4 with a special panorama camera. You can see some of his imagess at http://mpwarner.smugmug.com
