Who says teachers have to be liberals?

Kansas Teacher With Conservative Views Gets Job Back

A high school teacher in Kansas who claimed his contract was not renewed due to his conservative political views has been reinstated.

Tim Latham, 44, who was told that his school-affiliated Web site was "too patriotic," will return this fall to the 2,000-student Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kan., where he'll continue teaching American history and government for a second consecutive year. Since the contract renewal became official late last week, Latham, a teaching veteran of 20 years, said he's received countless well-wishes from students and teachers alike.

"My cell phone just went off again," Latham told FOXNews.com on Tuesday. "I have received well over 1,000 e-mails, comments on my Facebook page, personal letters and phone calls, not only from all over the country, but from all over the world. I even had a guy who wrote me from China, saying he could see this happening in China, but not here."

Latham, who was criticized by a student for not airing President Obama's inaugural address during class, filed a grievance with his school district earlier this month after he was told in April that his contract would not be renewed.

The married father of three had claimed school officials violated his contract by not conducting proper reviews — four 20-minute in-class evaluations throughout the year — and said school administrators were looking for a way to get rid of him due to his personal politics.
But Latham was informed last Thursday by District Superintendent Randy Weseman that there were "inconsistencies in the evaluation process" and that his contract would be renewed for 2009-10. Latham said he was not surprised.
Weseman confirmed to FOXNews.com that Latham will be back next year. He said administrators erred by not conducting enough in-class evaluations.

"To make a long story short, they didn't do what they were supposed to," Weseman said. "Obviously there are implications to procedures not being followed."
Latham conducted himself in a "respectful and dignified" manner throughout the process, Weseman said, adding that the "injustice" claimed by Latham had been confirmed.
During a meeting last September with Assistant Principal Jan Gentry, Latham claims Gentry mentioned his school-affiliated Web site, which she called "too patriotic." The site had links to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force, the U.S. Army and other military-and history-related sites.
He claimed the critiques took a personal turn in October, when class lessons began focusing on the presidential race between Obama and John McCain. One unidentified student has complained to Gentry that Latham had been too critical of Obama.
"I had been called into [Gentry's office] and was told I was picking on Obama in class," Latham said earlier this month. "But I didn't cover anything else that wasn't already covered by anybody else in the news."
Latham also said that Gentry asked him about a "McCain-Palin" bumper sticker on his car.
"She said, 'I don't know how you could support that woman,'" Latham said. "That was the beginning of what was going on. They were trying to find a reason to get rid of me."
Latham said a condition of his reinstatement would be that Gentry would not conduct his evaluations any longer, Weseman said. Gentry could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Chloe Mercer, who graduated Lawrence High School last month, said Latham's class was her favorite and said he was fair despite his decision not to show Obama's inauguration in class.
"He chose not to show it, but he printed out Obama's speech and we read it and discussed what we felt was good about it," Mercer told FOXNews.com earlier this month. "[Latham] was fair. He listened to all sides of every issue. He actually made print-outs of every candidate and how they felt on certain hot-button issues."

The previous post was credited to Fox News. No other news organization would report it.

See there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for the update.I told you to keep the faith.

Ric, thank you. Some liberals will not be able to read it, too long. But, thanks, and I am not surprised that no liberal station would cover it.
But, now, I truly feel, if he discussed the presidential race, he should have showed some of the inauguration. It is an important part of U.S. history and government.
But, this happens far to often in academia. The conservatives don't get the same treatment. Now, being from a very conservative areas of the country, most of our teachers are conservative. The others, keep to the lesson plan. I have gone in at times and said they (the teacher) had crossed the bounds, and must teach what is in the lesson plan. My daughter just did her Junior Thesis on evolution and did well.

Oh, Ric. I forgot to mention the part about him being "too patriotic". That means, as I have said, there are levels of patriotism. Dang (yes, I know that it is derived off 'Damm'. although, Damm is not a profane word. It was used to describe those who were separate, or separated from God. They were Dammed from God), I am good.

Quick Poll - how many of our young children know the name Obama and recognize him after a few short months in office? How nany had the asme recognition for Bush after 8 years?

The difference is in the constant marketing, propaganda machine that BO has in our media and schools. Visit your childrens school and see if there are posters and books all over the place.

DRL said...

Sean, Me first.

Not much in the way of propaganda in Idaho Falls. Even academia isn't impressed with him. They do teach what it applicable (i.e. the results of the election). But, no posters. There is a picture of the President of the United States in the main office, along with the Governor.

Nice living in a conservative (a.k.a. God's country) land.

DRL said...

Sean, you know I hate to mess up your poll, but most socialist enjoy seeing the picture of there leader plastered in schools, public squares, homes, government buildings, private businesses, parks, anywhere a person can go, etc.......
I would imagine, even if some answer, this is not an accurate poll. It will be interesting, if people are honest with it.

Sean said...

I guess other question would be, were the previous president's photos (etc.) pasted throughout the school?

DRL said...

No Sean, they were in the same place a President Husein's (the living one)

Doug said...

Sean,
now you're just being silly. My kids and any other kids I can think of know full well who the President was under the previous administration and is under the current.
And despite what you may believe they are quite capable of formulating opinions and making decisions for themselves. I know this runs counter to the nefarious liberal media brainwash conspiracy to which you adhere.
My eldest daughter voted for McCain.
This informal poll of yours is especially ironic given your own entrenched conservative political bias and allegiance to right wing dogma.

Sean said...

Let he who is without bias cast the first judgment.

Doug said...

He who is without bias that casts the first judgement risks being judged which likely will lead to personal bias.

My bias is and has been that the similarities between the two major political parties far outweigh the differences.
They will both expend much energy & resource to gain and maintain power.
They defer indefinitely difficult policy decisions.
They excel at blame and fail at accountability.
They will piss on you and tell you it's raining.
Their incompetence, indifference and hypocrisy is forever seeking new boundaries and stands to be the ruin of the Republic.
This is the rule on both sides of the aisle, especially the Senate, where all the future and former candidates continue to feed at the trough.
You speak out against the current occupant and I actually admire that. I honor your dissent. That's patriotism.
Where you and I part company is my belief is that it is not going to make one bit of difference who heads the show up there.
Either way, speaking metaphorically, we are fucked.

Philosophically and Psychologically,We aren't fucked even metaphorically. Is the glass half empty or half full? In the whole scheme of Evolution, are we progressing or not? drl seems to really want to attack me.Like Robby Cleveland, everyone was chucking rocks and he came out and hit me...the tiniest of all.

Doug said...

Poor Robbie Cleveland. What a sad case.

Sean said...

Who's Robbie Cleveland?

Sean said...

Doug, I think we agree more than you might think. Both parties are taking more and more control of our lives and we have lost freedom (and responsibility) in the process. Neither party is made up of angels - so we must keep a very close eye on them and limit their powers.

Where we differ, though, is that this current president has a far more radical view of the world and how America should be re-made. Further, he is moving to the left much, much faster than any other president in history.

Doug said...

Sean,
Robbie Cleveland was a fellow denizen of Deans Circle that lived katy corner to the Larsons and next door to Alice & JoAnna. He never seemed to quite fit in anywhere.
I have heard he ended up taking his own life after I left.

Taking the country to the left you say?
-More troops now in Afghanistan than under the previous guy.
-Expanding the previous administrations policies of indefinite detention without charge of suspected enemy combatants. In other words, look at the wrong guy funny and you could end up in a cage somewhere in the deep tropics.
These are hardly the acts of what is by definition a liberal.
Georgetown University Professor of Constitutional Law Jonathan Turley has called the President's administration even more draconian than that of Bush for it's disregard of human rights as it pertains to the so called enemy combatants.
You can argue that Obama's social policies are more liberal than Bush's. This argument is somewhat disingenuous simply because Bush had no discernible social policy. He was a one trick pony.
Back to my original premise. Consider your life as it moved through the Regan/Bush/Clinton/Bush presidencies.
Change that much did it?
Mine didn't.
Through it all I have seen but two surefire guarantees.
Taxes & Death.
I do not see that changing much under the new guy.

DRL said...

Doug, you do have to (well you don't have to, but if you are honest you will) admit that academia is liberal. There are very few areas in any level of academia that is conservative.

DRL said...

Joanna, be honest with me. Where have I "attacked" you since I apologized to you?

Sean said...

Doug, why spend all this time blogging about politics if you believe it really doesn't matter who's running things?

Doug said...

Because I am passionate in my belief that it doesn't matter.
Hey, apathetic indifference is a way of life too ya' know.
Plus I just enjoy messing with you all.

Joanna said...

drl,You attacked me on a recent post and said you'd come back, whatever that meant.I really don't care but, you say you're a man of Christ but,B.S. is always flowing out of your mind and onto this blog so,I respond(unfortunately)Either talk the talk and walk the walk or shutup.

Joanna said...

drl,It was the post making fun of you having a "Napoleon" complex. I agree that you have that.

DRL said...

Joanna, please tell me a specific thing I said. Not just that in some post I attacked you. Please, take a page form rac's rule book and quote me.

And on the Napoleon post, who is attacking who now?????? You are attacking me. I am a Christian and am forgiven. I will pray that you will find Christ too. You will be in my heart through prayer.

Choosing not to decide IS in fact a choice.
And that song blows.
