I found some slides of some of us surfing at Talafofo, Rick's Reef, and Right Side Boat Basin. I have a buddy that is digitizing them for me and I'll post them as soon as I can. We were all pretty much kooks then but they should be pretty classic. In the mean time, to get caught up, I'll post some current stuff. This is me and the 717 in Kona.
I noticed as I read all the posts, one of the overlying themes was - how did we all survive those days? I often wonder that myself. By the way, anyone remember the pickup truck rollover at Talafofo? That rollover was definitely heavy. I know it rolled over me and I cracked my head open and got knocked out. Whoever was in the bed with me got pitched over the fence and into the cow pasture. My brother Robert was in the cab with Dave and Chris Larson and someone broke an arm trying to save us all!
Also, I've been looking all my life for another water tank to swim in and haven't had any luck! How bout you guys?

We were just commenting on that yesterday. Brings a new dimension to "Don't drink the water".
I remember that wreck as if it were yesterday. The cattails before and during the ride, the rain on the way to the bay, the waves were up that day. Crossing the talafofo river bridge at close to 60 mph, rounding the curve going too fast, sliding sideways, going into slow-motion as we slid, the right rear tire catching a pot hole and the truck flipping onto its roof and then back up onto its wheels. Benny Bast was sitting up front on the passenger side with his arm out the window as the truck rolled over onto it, breaking it. Robert Jones was up front in the middle and suffered no damage other than a slight headache. The windshield crashed in and hit Chris our driver, in the face. He got some cuts and bruises. Poor Jeff was all the way in the back of the truck bed and got skegged in the head by one of the surfboards then hit the road. Paul Carlson, sitting in the back up against the cab behind the driver, got catapulted out and into the bushes along the side of the road, with only minor bumps scratches and bruises. I was in the back, up against the cab on the passenger side. I got dumped on the road, tucked and rolled and came right back up on my feet, with only a tiny scratch on my right knee. I walked to the store and called the ambulance. We all got a free ride to the hospital where we were treated and released. Damn sure if Chris didn't cut the roof off of that truck and keep driving it around wearing a pair of motorcycle goggles. I may even have a picture of that somewhere. Chris, I want you to know my brother, that I forgave you for that wreck as soon as it happened.
We all lived to tell the tale.
JEFF !! Talofofo Bay? T-BAY?
Yeah, post those pictures Brah!
I'd love to see them. That surfspot brings back all kinds of memories.
Dave, such a cool report on T-Bay. I remember surfing that brown water on what I thought were cold days, after a long rain or a typhoon. Nah, those were truly warm days, compared this freakin' mess out here in California.
That's it... I'm headed back to Tahiti. Did you know that even Tahiti has it's own brown water, volcanic soil surf spots?
Yepper, over at Chinese Bay, Papeeno and Rocky Point Tahiti. Made me homesick, literally, after a few gulps of brown ocean water .... HELP, I'm reliving T-BAY all over again. Aggggh!
