Coco Joe lived with me on Oahu, and he worked for Leather Together, managed by Pascal Nelson.
Every morning at 4:30 AM, we got our okoles up and packed our sticks and headed out to Point Panic (back when it was legal to surf there), and surfed that right barrel for hours before we had to go to work to pay our $375 rents.
Pascal Nelson was goofy-footed, would catch these big barreled rights and would just lay-back in the barrel while yelling at us as we were paddling out the channel, telling us to "take it easy, re-lax". Way, way too funny!

That looks like a Schlitz Beer can to me. Reconize one anywhere!

The name rings a bell, about as far as that goes.

Joe Hipolito is Coco Joe. I last saw him in 2000 at Cost-u-Less on Guam. I think he is married with 2 kids. Johnny I do have some pictures if I can ever get them online. Funny story about schlitz beer. When I was teaching for Central Texas college on the US army base in Korea I had all the Military privliges and Schlitz Beer was on sale for $1.80. I had bought a few cases for a party at my house. Well no one drank it so I just kept it cold in a cooler, out in the garden all the time and it was always there to drink. I think that is why my husband wanted to get married. A German looking girl in Korea that came with a constant supply of cold beer.

Hey Juliet, if anyone know Coco Joe (da Joe Hipolito), it would be us eh?! That critter use to sleep on the floor at my apartment on Davenport Street on in Makiki, Oahu.
Wow, you were a teacher @ Central Texas College on base in Korea? Way cool. I was in Korea only once in my life, at Kimpo Airport. I remember tall Korean guards in dark blue long-sleeved outfits, armed with Uzzi's (sp?).

When I was there, I was enroute to Fukuoka, Japan to perform out there. Alright then!

I was in Korea for two postings for a total of 10 years. We were in Karachi, Pakistan for 3 years and I've been here in Cairo for 10 years. So now are you living in Tahiti these days?

Cairo? Whooooooooaaa! What are you doing there Juliet?

I live in Temecula, California, but I have a home in Punaauia, Tahiti.

Where is Benji?

Joe Hipolito and I were together in Hawaii - around 1979 or so - A very sweet guy. We lived in Waikiki. Wow. Small world. Then I moved to the mainland - Johnny, did I know you in Oahu?

Desi, I remember that Joe mentioned your name several times.

I was a lifeguard at the Outrigger Canoe Club (OCC) at 2909 Kalakaua Avenue. I recall meeting you only once though.

I still see Joe everyonce in a while. He doesn't go by Hipolito anymore though. He still works at the Naval Comisary and Cost-u-Less.

I"ll print his picture out and give it to him next time I see him. I'll try to grab a current pic to post and of course I'll let him know you're all talking story about him.

Maybe he'll sign up to defend himself.

:-)

Paul! Tell Joe I said "hi" next time you see him :-)

Paul tell Joe Hi for me, also what is his current name? Johnny, I ask my self that question everyday " what am I doing in Cairo". My husband is employed here but I haven't worked here, just been an ALFA MOM, I did go to Grad School at the American University here and I guess I will go back next semester and try to finish my degree ( no more excuses).

Paul, please try to find Coco Joe and tell him that I've trying to find him for many, many years.

He lived with me on Oahu for a long time, and he was a very close friend, and still is - in my heart.

He & I use to walk around in downtown Waikiki and window-shop, looking for stuff...and once, he saw a brand of coconut oil & shampoos titled "Coco Joe". He stuck with that name ever since, that I could remember.

Coco Joe would definitely remember early morning Point Panic with me, him, Pascal Nelson and my younger brother Franky "Hollywood".

Paul (SCUMSON), I just spoke to my sister on Guam, and she said that Coco Joe / Joe Hipolito still works on base. She's going to let him know that we're all lookin' for him to join up on this Blog.

He'd be screamin' happy, that's for sure.

Juliet, I have a brother-in-law who taught at a University in Cairo just a few short years back, Dr. Curtis Doebbler, International Law. I'm sure the chances of you ever runing into him were slim to none. Just thought I would inquire.

Paul, he works right near you ...let him know that all these people are looking for him. He's such a nice man!!!As are you for connecting me to the Dean's Circle Gang...Thank-You for reaching out:)

Ric, Did he work at the American University?

Johnny Borja said...

Desi, did you work at restaurant that was upstairs at King's Alley on Kanakapolei Street?

Juliet, will you be scanning and then posting those pics of Coco Joe? Since we hung out at Perez Acres quite often, dig into your picture stash (just the pics ... not the stash) and get 'em scanned and up on this Blog. :)

Johnny - When I was with Joe, I was working at the Bishop Trust Company during the day as a receptionist and at night I took some classes at Kapiolani Community College. I am trying to remember how I even met Joe - I didn't know him on Guam - I thought I ment him in Honolulu through the Reyes brothers (from Barrigada - then they were in Kaneohe), I think I met him while I was living in Kaneohe... or maybe through Roxanne and Melvin? I can't remember now - but we hung out for awhile in 1979. I remember hanging out on King's Alley, vaguely. :-)

Desi, I think Joe was working at Leather Together with Pascal Nelson. It's been awhile eh?! I do remember that he mentioned your name several times though.

Glad to hear you did the KCC education thing. It works great later in life. I finished also at San Diego State University. The UH Manoa thing was cool, but I ended up surfing too much and at times jeopardizing my education there.
