No Summer in Alaska

While everyone is getting ready to go to Vegas (sorry, not this time for me) and dealing with desert heat (remember it's a "dry" heat), I'm still hoping that we will have some summer-like weather up here. So far only one day in the mid-60s. We're still dealing with spring-time allergies since the flowering bushes have only just started. Lilacs are still coming out! Please send some of that Vegas heat up to Alaska...Don't need the sunshine since we have about 19 hours of daylight at the moment.

Hae sun in Vegas...and I hope someone hits a jackpot on the slots.

We will miss not having a representative from the Eldredge family... maybe next time. Make sure you stay tuned-in to the DC blog, we may need to cool things off a bit once the gang hits the streets of vegas baby!!!

The Eldredge sisters will be in Denali National Park this summer instead...We'll raise a glass to you guys when we're there. No gambling, but maybe we'll get to see bears and/or moose instead :-)

I was in Germany April and May and what should have been cool and rainy was hot and dry. Here in Egypt it is super hot. I think it is going to be really hot this year because our wild street cat always looses his long winter coat in summer and this year his hair is really short. He is completely feral he was born in the garden and we have a strange relationship, he would take my hand off if I ever tried to pet him. He shows up at my front door, hisses at me and then I feed him, usually raw steak. He had a brother who used to knock at the door by shaking it, but this guy just has a regular schedule when he comes by. He is the only feral kitty we feed and he keeps the other strays out of the garden.

You all will be missed in Vegas. Like Dave said, keep tuned to the blog.

When I was living in Alaska, about once a year I would go to Talkitna with some friends for a 2-3 day concert just out side of Danali(like a mini woodstock jam). Is that still going on annually up there?

Ric,

The Folk Festival is still going on in Talkeetna...but a similar concert weekend in Girdwood was cancelled because of rowdy crowds the past few years.

On the other hand, Willie Nelson will be playing at the State Fair at the end of August. Last year Charlie Daniels was here...Either they are willing to play "lesser" venues or the Alaska State Fair is more important than I thought!

Wynonna Judd is playing at Elmendorf AFB this Friday. And Naomi will be part of the concert.

Sarah, thanks! Loved going to the Talkeetna folk festival. If my memory serves me well, it lasted for like 3 days and 2 nights...non stop.

I would go with friends in there VW bus. We would listen to music, eat drink and sleep there for 2 or 3 days. Crazy! Couldn't do it now if I wanted to.

Did you see on the news that some girl was attacted by a bear during a bike race in Alaska today. You should get some of that bear mace spray for your camping holiday. I wonder if it really works?

Juliet, bear and moose attacks are not common but happen more often than one likes. Mountain lion is another problem. A friend and I were tracked by 3 Mountain lions about 10 years ago. We could hear them talking to one another, as they moved around us. We never saw them. We are not always at the top of the food chain.
As far as bear spray, we believe strongly in it. It is not the peper spray you may be thinking of, but rather, lead. You put enough rounds of almost any caliber into an animal and it will not eat you. The peper spray "bear spray" many times makes the animal mad. Even if they don't end up eating you, they will most likely still be mad when they meet the next human. The man who invented bear spray was hunting an (I cant remember if it was him or his hunting partner) but one was attacked by a bear. The other of the two sprayed the bear. Because it comes out in a wide pattern, it got the bear, and both men. The one with open wounds was in bad shape because of the peper spray in his open wounds. If his partner would have stuck the barrel of his rifel in the bears side, just behind its shoulders and pulled the triger, the bear would not have attacked anyone else.

So yes, I carry bear spray. I know you didn't ask if I cary, but if I heard. My bear spray is a .357 Magnum, or a 40 S&W Glock with a 16 round capacity. I can unload ether of them in about 5 seconds.
