Rice Cookers

How many of you Howlees (Spelling again) living stateside now, own a genuine rice cooker, like the kind every family owned on Guam back in the day? Must admit that I do, and use it every other day!

I have one and love to use it but lately in the interest of being healthier, I've been only eating brown rice and unfortunatly the rice cooker just doesn't do the job for brown rice.

Cindy, I'm the cook in the house. White rice is out and brown rice is in!

Get 'Uncle Ben's' (this name brand only) Whole Grain Brown Rice. In the rice cooker, place 3&3/4 cups of water, 1&1/2 cups of Uncle Ben's whole grain brown rice, and a dab of butter or veggie oil. Let the rice cooker do the rest! Yummy! Trust me! Try it and let me know if it works for you!

Ric, Thanks for the tip...I'm going to drag out the rice cooker from under the cupboard, buy some Uncle Ben's and try it.

I've got one of those things but it doesn't work worth a damn. I think it was made in Detroit.

I would love to have one. I live in Idaho and guess what. We eat Spuds (Potato). One of the best things about lunch with RAC was the rice. It was made in a rice cooker. No pun on the lady hitting on me.

Red Rice! Any one know how to make it? Miss the stuff!

You need a special ingredient for Red Rice - Achote seeds. I found some in a gourmet store in (of all places) Cleveland. But, I haven't tried it out yet. There are some recipes for Red Rice published on the Internet if you search.

Achoite is also used in Puerto Rico, There was a brand Arayo (I think that was the name)that has the dried seeds. It is also called annatto(powder or paste) You soak them in water and rub them together to make the red water to add to the rice. Ask your supermarket to see about ordering you some. I have a cheap rice cooker that I have used for 20 years.

Then you can add a tad bit of bacon and onions and garlic. Oh some peas toward the end of the cooking cycle:)Mauleg!!!

I love hot fresh, steamy, white rice, right out of the cooker. Put a fried egg on top of it with some soysauce and mmmmm....mmm. You know though when I visit NC I tend to eat more bisquits. That must be the haole in me.

Joana is on .

You can find achote seeds at some
"asian" food stores ,add finley chopped onions and cooked bacon and the peas . Soak the seeds in a small cup of water, rub the red out of them and strain keep the red water.
add to rice and cook normally.
A trick is to add chicken broth
with the red...but use the correct amount of liquid .

There are some serious high tech rice cookers around now...

There's a lot of "island" in everyone here, and I just love that. Even in Tahiti, they eat rice. I recently introduced "red rice" there in Tahiti and they loved it very much.

I'm off to Papeete on 11/21, but will be back to post a Tahiti surf report. Mauru' ru Roa to all.
