Battle in Guam

Clinton, Obama Fight Long-Distance

It would seem that Guamanians wouldn't care much about the US presidential election this year since although Guamanians are US citizens, they can not vote in the elections. However, there are several Democrat delegates in Guam that hold some clout with Democratic presidential elections. Check out the whole story:

About now the people of Guam are probably wishing they hadn't been "liberated" back in WWII. Not having to endure this kind of mess can certainly be a blessing.

What a real mess. A real Possible solution: Robert Caraway would be a good 'write in'!

If I remember right, most Guamanians were Deomcrats BECAUSE...... they received relief moneys from the USA's after they lost their homes after a typhoon blew their homes away in the storm. They also recieve food stamps and medicare. I think the USA "pretened" to feel guilty at some point (ironic laugh tracks inserted here) about saving the Guamanians from the Japaneese occupation that slaughtered their peoples and inslaved them during ww2, and thought they needed to appease the natives but undoing so, they ended up having to give them USA citizen rights with all the benifits without (for some reason I dont dont understant) Presidentual Voting rights. Enlighten me boys. meaning you RAC, RIC, PAUl, Matt, Drl

Everyone, well stated.
Before I left in '81 the debate was on about makeing Guam the 51st State. The reason given for not making it such was turism was the only "indestry" Guam had. GORCO did not count. This would have given Guamanians the ability to vote not only for President, but also 2 votes in the Senate, and 1 vote in the House.

I just came from voting. I felt honored to be able to make a difference whereas we didn't matter before.Guam was taken over several times in its history. First the Spaniards with Magellan, genocide for the Chamorro men for 333 yrs. Then the U.S. won Guam from them in 1898. Then lost it to the Japanese and then recaptured it.I asked my father-in-law,who's 85 yrs. old if he was democrat or republican. He answered American!!!:)

For some reason, I sense discontent with Guam and Guamanians. I'm from here and to have a reunion with very questionable mindsets makes me wonder why gather at all. Stay in Vegas and your home state. Yes, you might be raised here but, don't show disrespect at the same time. That's 2 faced.

My last comment was in response to Juls post. There are a heck of a lot of republicans here.FYI.a

When 2 or more people write a memoire about the same place, event or time, each persons recollection will be slighty or even totally diffrent, as this applies too to our memories of Guam.

Yes Joanna, there are a lot of Republicans here (which really surprises me considering we were such hard core hippie kids). The best part is it makes for some awesome conversations. It would be pretty boring if we all put our pants on the same way.

RAC, you're right. I guess I let some things go and somethings I don't. I defend Guam because I know what's going on. I felt Juls was implying that Guamanians were democrats just so they could receive money like a welfare island.I know a lot of hard working Guamanians who pay taxes just like everyone else.In New Orleans, did you have to be a democrat to receive help?

RAC, you wear pants?

Breath Joanna, in through the nose... out through the mouth; then count to ten. Now count to ten backwards (if thats possible) and inhale... stretch... now exhale. Think only happy thoughts. There now, feel better? Now you are ready to continue on the DC blog. And yes, we are all still going to Vegas... right?

Joanna said...

Yes Dave:)

Dave, I just saw on CNN that the trust territories are being looked at closely because these so called "U.S. citizens" are under scrutiny. Are they really "Americans"?These people in the Trust territories...you tell me.I say I am.I did breathe like you advised and I still think its down right crazy.

Joanna, I said MOST not all Guamanians were Democrates when I was there. I have not seen any recent census.

On a lighter note, I have the most highest regard and respect for Guam, Gaumanians and us who were privaliged to live there. I wasn't into politics when I was a kid, most of my opinion's now come from my experiences and and memories of my life there, and what I have read about the island being a trust of the USA.

Juls, on a lighter note, reread your comment. I just felt like I had to say something. There are both democrats and republicans and independents here.Obama won by 7 votes but, the delegates still haven't said who exactly they're voting for.It will come out Tuesday.I do voice my opinion when I feel it's needed.why can the men debate and not women?(Dave)that last question was for you.

Ric Larson said...

Uhg,....what have I missed here? 'juls' comments seem to be of some concrete historical fact.

OK, maybe I am an idiot?...since I am one of 'those Rebublicans on the blog'? And why can "men debate and not women"? This went out when marriage was formed (so I was told by my current and former wifes).

And in my mind, Guamanians are wonderful, beautiful and courageous people.

We all on this blog, regardles of 'race' are Guamanians!

Joanna, you women can debate all night long if you want to. Please don't let me stop you. I just figured you might want to try the technique that I use when my blood starts to boil... over issues. But on the other hand, most guys like a good cat fight now and then, so by all means... carry-on : )

Ric Larson said...

I too love a 'cat fight'!

After reading your email, I'll put politics aside. That is what I love is that it is a free country!!!Thank-You James Wilson and the other 45 men:)Oh and you Dave.

Joanna,
I try not to comment on a lot of political posts on this blog but I must on this one (and for anyone else who cares to read it) I lived on Guam for 30 years, am married to a chamorro, and 2 of my kids were born there. We tried our damndest to make Guam our home but it was hard. Gov Guam will never change. They can't keep the lights on, and they can't keep the water flowing. The schools are shit and nobody cares. It's all about whose related to whom that matters. Even the republicans on Guam are liberals. They are always trying to get the U.S. to bail them out of the mess that they're in financially. Guam could have a HUGE agricultural industry if they wanted too. Or for that matter any other type of industry besides working for GovGuam. The "Connected" families send their kids off island to get educated. I made a lot of money on Guam and I will always consider it where I'm from but I will never live there again. All of us have been there and done that and just because we choose to call some place else home does'nt mean that we are backstabbing or turning our backs on the island. Guam can do so much better for itself as an island nation but chooses not too. So sad.

Mat,it is so sad...I'm logging off now.

Matt, I decided to stay out of the cat fight business this weekend and enjoy baseball, bb-q burgers and cold beer. But, if I had not, you would have been my coach in the ring! I think you said a lot of what I knew as truth about Guam. Shameful things like selling the prettiest coastlines to the Japanese so that they can peddle tourism and not locals. Generally speaking the laid back lifestyle had breed a lot laziness like Matt said, they could very well be an independent island nation if they weren't so dependant of USA moneys that they don't even pay taxes for. I remember well a lady in line at payless once told me she buys her dogs steaks with food stamps because she couldn't buy dog food with food stamps. Shameful and sad.

And yes Joanna it is sad. It makes me sad. I was and still am proud of Guam, but the way of life politically is nothing to be proud of.

I don't want to fight, cat or other wise but it is true, we all can say how we feel.

And might I add, I speculate the only reason the USA continues to support Guam and not shack her off is to retain it's foot hold of perfectly located air bases on the most beautiful part of the island. I can see why Guamanians are fighting against the re-fortification of the base there. But if you want all the military to leave, and you want Guam to return to it's ancient days, then vote for a libertarian and say good buy to food stamps, typhoon relief and welfare. Meow.
