Way cool Jeff. Talofofo has to be one of my favorite places in the world. Anyone remember renting horses at the top of the hill and riding them down to the beach?

The first thought I had was...I'm not a surfer, but I remember going horse back riding in Talafofo. Wasn't there a cave at the top of the hill where we rented horses?

Alice and I took English and Western riding lessons at the Ranch there for a year in middle school. I always got Valentine, the nasty little Shetland. She had blood shot eyes, used to push me with her head when ever I turned in front of her. Tried to step on my feet, had to keep her on a tight rein just to get out the gate which she always tried to rub me off on and Linda the trainer, said she liked me! Alice always got the nice big horse dusty or one of the gentle horses. Talafofo Bay, hot fine black sand and murky water. I remember a shark bit Ben's board once. My surfing career began and ended there. Is there still a store at the entrance of the river across the road? Great photos.

I think these boat basin pics are from a time before the sewer and brake water was built.

I ment to say the waste water treatment facility. I remember all the surfers were worried that was going to spoil the ride at boat basin.

Juliet, you poor dear. Shetlands are stubborn and can be nasty. When we were real little,(BG), before Guam, we had two Shetland ponies. Smokey and Shorty. They used to always try to run away to the neighboring horses. one time one went running away with me on him and I couldn't stop him. I think I was like 6 years old.

I used to ride the horses there with Dana Spade. The ranch is gone now, who knows what happened to the horses.

Cool pics. Too bad the bay sucks now, last few storms rearranged the bottom. I'll try to remember to take some pictures next time I'm down that way.

Chovin and I paddled up Talafofo river once. When we got back he was poking around on dark areas on the sand. He claimed it was Iron. I didn't believe him but let him take some home to play with. Sure enough, we sperated it out with a magnet. It was atleast 70% iron.

I remember trying to surf there. I sucked at it. I tried, but after too much salt water bashing to my nose, eyes and throat, I knew that wasn't my sport. better to sit on the beach and watch the tan lean young men do it. Right Becki?

I never did look good in "ocean hair." I am all about the beach and laying out, however, since SPF wasn't yet invented (remember slathering our bodies with baby oil?), the early days of serious sun damage have taken their toll. So now I sit under the umbrella with my SPF 120 and read and people watch. Nothing like it on California beaches.

You are so right Becki about the tanning in the old days. I loved that Hawaiian tropical tanning oil. Smelled so good like coconut oil, slicked up and burning away. About 10 years ago I really started to be more careful in the sun but it is not easy to find a product that works for a long time in the water. I used to like that stuff called "Alligator" but it isn't available around here. Okay, sun worshipers what is the best sun block that you like to use, that works if you are in the water for a long time. Now that the kids are based in the USA, I can get some products for them to bring home here to Cairo. Of course I can always get one of those head to toe black bathing costumes that the true believers wear here at the beach. ME Penguins.

Juliet, the best sun block I've found is my house. It helps if you apply generous amount of air conditioning too.

I too have damaged my fair skin with years of sun worshiping, not to mention tanning booths. I have already had a couple spots taken off my arms by a doc for precautions. Gee, I live in Arizona now, and never lay out anymore, way to hot in the summer for that. So like rac said, the best sun block is stay in and watch TV.

RAC, what are you talking about? You can walk around the SLC area all day and never get any sun through the smog!
RAC, Let me know about a Jellystone camp trip.

I, like all of you was once a sun worshiper. have a "cute" little scar now on my nose to prove it. The doc didn't get it all though, so I know I need to go back. I still like to lay out though. Gotta tan those legs. I wear a ball cap and lots of sun screen on my face.

The best sunscreen I have found is Neutrogena. It is PABA free which keeps it from burning your eyes and is waterproof. I used it a few years ago on a whitewater rafting trip and it worked wonders. It was their recommendation and I have never used anything else.
