My step dad grew up on Guam, and I remember the stories of change.
GW was in some quansa huts(I can't remember where), he watched as they put the VW on the pole at the dealership in Agana.
I love the new and old pics, keep them comming.

The Town House was the first place we went to that fine July day in '67 we arrived on the island. The Montvel-Cohens took us. Anybody remember them? Tom & Evan I think. Last I heard Allan Amor told me that Tom was an attorney in New York.

Didn't that VW get airborn in one of the typhoons?

Well I seem to remember Mrs Montvel Cohen as one of the original Ban The Bra womens libbers. As a young child she had survived the allied bombing of Germany about which she was forever bitching.

I remember they used to vote on everything as a family. Evan was 2 but I think his vote carried the same weight.

Well that sounds exactly like the Montvel Cohen family I remember. She eventually left him and the family. I seem to remember that was pretty hard on Tom. He left back stateside '70 or so. Haven't seen or heard from him since. I am sorry to hear about his dad, he would have been relatively young still in the 80's. He was a good person. He endured much bullshit from that woman.

I remember the store well. Pretty much resembled a overstuffed, dime store of the 50-60's

My first job was in the new Town House in the shoe dept in 1999-81. I worked with a philipino named Sony. She was still there in that damn shoe dept. when I went back 6 years ago, poor woman.

I think there were really only two places to shop, Town House and Ben Franklin's. I remember spending hours going through the Sears catalogue dreaming of the pastel colored dresses and toy section. Does anyone remember the name of the cool head shop that opened up where some people bought that locker room stuff "Rush" and of course Zig Zag rolling paper. I think we even had a Playboy club and Orange Julius at one point.

Nice pic Dave, (from Roxy)! Don't remember if we arrived on the 'rock' when this 'Town House' was in busines? But do remember either seeing pictures of it from my step father who grew up in Guam, or if it was there prior to it being a bigger store?

Juliet, triva. Did you know when Ben Franklin's came to Guam, it was the tallest building at the time and the first building with an escalator in it? And did you also know that back in the early and mid '70's Guam had the world's largest Mac Donalds? Guam does make and have a lot of history!

Juliet, this is one of the things (next to bringing friends back together and political commintary, Haha) that I love about this blog.
I fortot Ben Franklin(there is still on in Idaho Falls).
Sears catilogue was always a dream book. Remember the song about which page to see the man modeling boxer shorts.
I can't remember the name of the head shop, but it was in Agana accross the street from Boat Basin. Oh yea.
Ric, that Mcdonalds, was a good memory, never mind.
Juliet, yes we (I am Desi's brother) lived in the Acadamy Garden Appts.

oh wait! I think me, Wendy and Nancy got caught doing the five finger discount at the "town house". I swear to God, it was all Nancys idea.

My 2nd real job (first was USO day camp counselor) was in the sewing department at the Town House. I cut fabric and kept the zippers and thread all organized. The Filipino ladies all took pity on me and my boring food ( usually sandwich) and were always sharing their food with me.

Hey Rod, How is your little sister. I think I had a regular job babysitting her. I remember, your mother taught me how to make her a cheese omelet. I still make them the same way. Does anyone remeber the junky 5 and Dime store that had the talking Mina bird. Black with a yellow beak. I think it was called Mariana's Wholesales or something.

Ok Juliet, I remember babysitting Rods 'lil sis. you must have been backup, after we left.

The little five and dime was Lujans. We (Sam, and Alice and all the rest of us ) used to buy our hand nets there for when we went fishing at Paseo for Petland. Also, Ben Franklins came later. It was Marks Walgreens and Townhouse I think for "Real" shopping. Ben Franklins was across the street from where it is now but a lot smaller.Hey DRL, we have a Ben Franklin here too. It's up the road in Woodland Park. We go there sometimes just for kicks.
