Speaking of Goat Meat
In searching my memory banks I'm having a hard time remembering any dairy farms or cattle ranches on the island. What I do recall is my parents later talking about the scarcity of beef and how we got our red meat fix via New Zealand lamb. If I'm right, milk was also in short supply and usually came in the powdered variety. This could all be speculation on my part (or the result of a big belly) so if someone could help me out here...

I don't remember there being any shortage of meat around our house. My mom was a first class chef and steak was a regular meal around out house. I loved the NZ leg of lamb and Aussie beef but I also remember US beef. My mom would somehow get milk from the military on occasion and we used the carnation powder. I use powder milk out here also. That Formost crap is real poison made with coconut oil, I was raised on it. Does anyone remember the ice cream truck that would come around? Great fudge pops. We used to have a freezer outside the door in the back of our house, which was raided every once and a while. I think J&G had the monopoly for a while in the grocery store business. We also had fresh eggs for a while from Flores egg farm. I seem to remember some scandal that they went bankrupt and left the chickens starving in the cadges. You always knew when you were near the egg farm from the smell.
hmmm.. the name of the Palauan that drove the Ice Cream truck is on the tip of my tongue.
I remember the smell of the filled milk when it started going bad, and the vice principle at BJHS that used to try to convince us that the milk was still good by drinking it even though it had started to curdle. bleh.
J&G did try a cattle ranch on Tinian for a while. They also tried a round-up rodeo for the tourists down in Ipan. They've lost Townhouse, Agana Shopping Center and the PayLess Supermarkets now.
Yea, I still can't drink milk. I never minded the meat, wether US beef, NZ goat, Aussie beef, Phillipino dog, it was all good. I knew someone on the corner who had eggs.
I worked as a bager at J&G when they had the milk dairy, I still wouldn't drik the milk. And as far as the dehi milk, I would sooner eat it in powder form than in water.
I didn't drink the milk at all on Guam, it was awful. Now when I drink real milk here in the states I always think about how good it is compaired to that Formost Crap.
We also enjoyed abundant supply of Ausy beef.
Lots of meat: beef, veal, and lamb from NZ and Austrailia. Some fresh beef and pork from Tinian. I think most of the chicken was local. Could find USDA beef in the mid-1970s at J&G, but always freezer burned.
Some milk and butter from Austrailia, too (the package had a kangaroo on it)...but mostly powered Formost non-fat milk. My mom would make with cold water and add ice to make it really cold--which made it barely palatable.
